About

With her riveting Blue Note debut Diavola, vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa makes her artistic arrival with an album that unveils her range as a band leader, a songwriter, and a fearless song interpreter who treats each gesture with subtlety and reverence. Co-produced by Joshua Redman and Don Was, Diavola is a collection of original songs and luminous arrangements that features an extraordinary cast of collaborators with Jeff Parker on guitar, Paul Cornish on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, Brian Blade on drums, and Redman on tenor saxophone.

Cavassa began to turn heads with her standout performance as the featured vocalist on Redman’s 2023 Blue Note debut where are we, which prompted DownBeat to declare her “a young singer with a deep, rich, fragile voice... Cavassa is a star in the making.” Stereophile wrote that “For many, the revelation of this album will be Cavassa. Her voice gets under your skin. It is idiosyncratic, but it is trustworthy in its clarity and almost physical in its intimacy… her intuitive interpretations and riveting voice make you sit very still in your chair.”

Gabrielle Cavassa's magnificent Blue Note debut draws from almost a century of popular song…Close-miked and free of reverb, a fascinatingly reimagined take on Bacharach and David's 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' is an early highlight. 'Prisoner of Love', a song associated with one of Cavassa's touchstones, the great Billy Eckstine, finds her approaching the vocal line the way a horn player might.
