Despite phenomenal playing, the Rococo Variations for flugelhorn is something of an acquired taste. The Pathétique finds conductor and orchestra on top form, performing with tremendous conviction. —

Lots of bravura but little subtlety from Matsuev. Symphony No. 4 gets more compelling as it progresses but the opaque long-distance shots of the orchestra are distracting. —
