Inspired by the natural beauty of Scotland – and what better way to celebrate SCO’s 50th anniversary in 2023 than the ‘Scottish’ Symphony! – No. 3 has a fiery character well suited for the ‘dynamic, energetic and exciting to watch’ conductor Maxim (The Guardian). Despite its numbering, No. 5 (known as the ‘Reformation’) is an early work which evokes the struggles and triumph of Protestantism. Its final chorale based on Luther’s much celebrated ‘Ein feste Burg’ draws the album to a reaffirming end.

The bright, low-fat sound and keen attack remembered under Mackerras have changed little to judge from this new recording of two of Mendelssohn’s symphonies. What the SCO offers is a cross between a traditional symphony orchestra and a period instrument ensemble…[In the Reformation] the vibrato-free strings lend religious purity and sheer urgency disguises where the music is busy rather than imaginative.

He’s a fine musician and it’s no surprise that he and his orchestra deliver an arresting account of Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony: vital, refined and unfailingly attentive to numerous delights thrown up by Mendelssohn’s orchestrations.
