Renowned for portraying the music of the baroque like no one else, Cecilia Bartoli presents her new recording of arias famously performed by legendary castrato, Farinelli.

Exploring the complex gender roles of the world of baroque opera, and highlighting the phenomenon of the castrati, a horrifying practice which led to some of the most celebrated work of the period.

Featuring works by Farinelli’s brother, Riccardo Broschi, and his mentor, Nicola Porpora, as well as Hasse, Caldara and Giacomelli. Including two new world premiere recordings, from Porpora’s Polifemo and Broschi’s La Merope.

If Farinelli delighted in adagio arias, adding his own discreet decoration, Bartoli follows suit and her reading of Porpora’s ‘Alto Giove’ is ravishing with the strings of Il Giardino Armonico providing a sumptuous accompaniment.

She mines the expressive and dramatic potential of the Italian language with unique intensity...Her terrifying cry of ‘barbaro’ will have you cowering...With singing of such febrile energy, sound and verbal sense in perfect marriage, you can easily forgive the odd squally moment above the stave.

The singing is crisp and authoritative. Bartoli’s emotional range is outstanding, and she can waft through a line or blast a phrase with style. She relishes the texts. Giovanni Antonini’s conducting matches his diva in pace and temperament.
