About
Margherita d’Anjou was Giacomo Meyerbeer’s fourth opera in Italian and his first real success. After an absence from the stage of about 150 years, it returned at the 43rd Festival della Valle d'Itria in an outstanding production. Director Alessandro Talevi’s ironical setting - where the War of the Roses takes place at the London Fashion Week - is perfectly matched by the elegant direction of Fabio Luisi with the Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia. The opera, which belongs to the semi-serious genre, moves from the warlike tones of Act One to the idyllic ones of Act Two, where both female protagonists appear: the queen, a soprano, and the wife, a contralto; both seek the love of an heroic tenor equally daring in battle and in music.

It’s valuable now to have the opportunity actually to see how this melodrama semiserio can work onstage, especially when the semiserio is courageously given full rein…Luisi keeps a relaxed hand on the proceedings and, if you are prepared for one or two vocal glitches in the brave name of ‘going for it’, the performance is compelling.

This Margherita is an haute couture queen who runs a Fashion Week that conveniently has a medieval theme…Reaction to this faddish take on the opera will of course be subjective…but I confess to having enjoyed it, albeit somewhat guiltily. It certainly helped that the musical side of the performance is up to the extraordinary demands that Meyerbeer makes upon his cast…Giulia De Blasis is brilliant in the extended passagework of Margherita’s solos.
