This album contains a selection of solo cantatas, both secular and sacred, from the Italian, German, and English traditions. Including works by Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach in settings large and small, with obbligato instruments ranging from oboe to chimes, the magnificent cantatas on this album create a portrait of this intimately transcendent repertoire.
With CANTATA: yet can I hear..., the American countertenor Bejun Mehta releases his first album on PENTATONE. Hailed as "arguably the best countertenor in the world today" by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Mehta here joins forces with the players of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, one of today's most renowned early music ensembles.

The period-instrument orchestra’s flautist, Christoph Huntgeburth, shines here…Mehta’s consciousness of text and sense of drama make vivid the Vivaldi work, while he is deeply moving in Johann Christoph Bach’s fine lament and noble in the Handel anthem aria (‘I will magnify thee’) as well as the title track

Mehta has one of the best voices in the business. Full, free and with real power behind it, it sits unapologetically at the operatic end of the countertenor spectrum, with a lovely natural spin to it. He’s also an unusually thoughtful programmer, as his latest recital bears out.

Mehta is in his considerable vocal prime on this beautifully-sung collection of Italian and German cantatas (plus three of Handel’s sacred arias in English); CPE Bach’s dissonant lament ‘Ach, dass ich Wassers gnug hätte’ showcases the formidable ‘blade’ and colour in his middle voice, the coloratura of Vivaldi’s Pianti, sospiri… is scintillating, and Handel’s ‘I will magnify thee’ is sung with a poise and simplicity that border on the sublime. Some of the finest singing I’ve heard on disc this year.
