The music is colourful and inventive, in a modern but accessible idiom, and each piece is a miniature tone poem which explores a wealth of textures and timbres in the lower orchestral register of the double bass. The five pieces can be performed singly, as a suite, and in any order. The piano accompaniments are creative and supportive, often in a higher register than the double bass, adding nuance and a lyrical stillness to a solo line which is constantly evolving both musically and rhythmically.
