The title Two and Six, rather than recalling the old British coin of the same name, refers to the two metro lines that encircle Paris. Because the lines share a stop at (almost) either end, one could imagine an infinite circumnavigation. In the same way, the piece is conceived as two duos that could be played separately, but could also be superimposed, with an overlap between the first and final measures of each half. A form that could keep spinning in a loop, suggesting a circular mode of experience, where the listener could get on or off at any stop, nevertheless moving across a similar musical landscape. First, there is a transfer station, then a number of elevated platforms, followed by a subterranean interlude, before rejoining the above-ground train again, in anticipation of another transfer. This movement recalls the the Egyptian myth of the complementary journeys of the sun and moon, invoked by Gérard Grisey in Jour, Contre-Jour.
In the first of the two duos, As Above, two alto flutes explore six episodes with contrasting textures and techniques. The same pattern occurs in reverse in So Below, for two bass clarinets. This is not a literal retrograde but a liberal re-interpretation of musical elements from a new perspective. The main shape of the narrative arc stays constant, while the durations and details shift.
Two and Six was commissioned by Radio France for Festival Présences fêting George Benjamin, and was premiered in Paris on 9 February 2020 by members of London Sinfonietta. Indebted to the sonorities of her Lovemusic, the piece is dedicated to Betsy Jolas, with gratitude and great admiration.

Le titre Two and Six fait reference, plutôt qu’à la pièce de monnaie irlando-britannique qui porte ce nom, aux deux lignes du métro parisien qui encerclent la ville en boucle. Puisqu’ils partagent un arrêt à chaque extrémité (presque), on pourrait imaginer une circumnavigation infinie. De la même façon, la pièce est conçue comme deux duos qui pourraient être joués séparément, mais également avec la possibilité d’une superposition dans les dernières et premières mesures de chaque partie. Une forme qui pourrait tourner en boucle, proposant une écoute circulaire où l’auditeur puisse monter ou descendre à n’importe quelle arrêt, traversant toutefois un paysage musical en parallèle. Station de transfert, puis un nombre d’arrêts sur des voies surélevées, suivi d’un interlude souterrain, avant de rejoindre le métro aérien et de transférer à nouveau. Un mouvement qui rappelle aussi le mythe égyptien des traversées complémentaires du soleil et de la lune, évoques par Gérard Grisey pour Jour, Contre-Jour.
Dans le premier des deux duos, As Above, deux flûtes en sol explorent six episodes en textures et techniques contrastants. Ce même pattern se reprend à l’envers avec So Below, pour deux clarinettes basses. Ce n’est pas un rétrograde mais une ré-interprétation libre des elements musicaux d’une autre perspective. Les grandes lignes de la courbe restent constantes, lorsque les durées et les particularités changent.
Pour la dette aux sonorités de sa Lovemusic, en gratitude et en grande admiration, la pièce est dédiée à Betsy Jolas.
