Immanence describes a sense of the divine that is manifested in the material world. It is a call to meaning that seeks out a metaphysical divine presence found even in mundane activities. This is in contrast to transcendent actions which are seen to be outside the realm of the material world. Another meaning of immanence is the quality of being contained within, or remaining within the boundaries of a person, of the world, or of the mind. There are philosophical resonances with Immanence found in Buddhism and Christianity, whose state can be initiated though prayer, reflection, meditation or active meditation such as walking in silence. After many repetitions of immanent activity, there is the hope for enlightenment and eventually transcendence. Many great philosophers have also highlighted Immanence as a path to wholeness.
