About
Gloria is designed to go with the orchestration of Handel’s Dixit Dominus which is a full string orchestra with harpsichord. In Gloria I omit the harpsichord and subdivide the strings into a string quartet and string orchestra to increase the range of sonorities available. Also in a similar way, I incorporate a solo vocal quintet and SATB soloists to offer potentially 5 solo quintet slots and four solo slots. Alternatively just four soloists could sing the quintets too with the addition of a second soprano from the chorus. In our high standard choirs: North Sea Voices and Ely Collegium, we make a feature of drawing soloists from our ranks. We will apply this approach also to the Dixit Dominus. The text of Gloria is quite short and I felt it needed an addition of holistic texts that refer to rejoicing at the miracle of nature, the power of reflection and meditation and the art of just being as additional forms of worship. I found text solutions from a variety of sources ranging from St Francis of Assisi to the Bhagavad Gita to John Donne to the contemporary Shamanic post, Seawolf. Gloria was composed in the summer of 2025 in Languedoc, Allonissos and Norfolk. It will première in Ely Cathedral on 11th April 2026 and 3rd July 2026 at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge.
