The title refers less to textural aspects of the piece (mostly single line, so limits on how much scope there is for that!) and more to the conflicts of material types and the way they are positioned alongside one another : fast moving sul ponticello tapping finally usurps lyrical lines which initially are the predominant feature of the piece. The way a composition comes into being can in itself be quite tangled/non-linear: an initial idea was to use a withdrawn cello piece from 1994 as a starting point as I relished the concept of a composition with a thirty year gestation period. However, I abandoned that in favour of newly composed material and a concert/CD launch at the October Gallery was an additional stimulus to complete the piece.
