I was invited to compose my concerto by Jennifer Stinton for a proposed recording of British flute concertos. It was written in the summer of 2003 and first performed by Anne Hodgson and the Musicians of All Saints, conducted by Dominic Nunns on July 6th 2008 at All Saints Arts Centre, Lewes. The material of the first movement is partly based on half remembered motifs from some of the film and television music associated with my childhood in the late sixties. This kind of music sometimes gave me ‘earworm’ so I eventually decided to do something creative with it. The dark sensuous tones of the alto flute provided the stimulus for the second movement, which is followed by effervescent finale. In the autumn of 2024, I made some revisions, including a version of the solo part of the second movement for flute as an alternative but not a replacement to the original alto flute part.
