In Templum I wanted to create an impression of stillness within sound which could stretch out over an extended period of time. The overall effect should be rather like the evening light gradually changing the colours on the surface of a lake or the ocean. The piece is a companion to contemplation or prayer, not distracting the listener but helping them become centred into a place of stillness and silence. I’ve long enjoyed sitting quietly in temples feeling the traces of presence left behind by past ceremonies which become absorbed into the identity and atmosphere of the buildings themselves.
