Scattered across Asia, Africa and Europe are thousands of standing stones – Menhirs – monuments of ancient prehistoric cultures, the functions, and origins of which remain elusive. Their craggy surfaces survive, perhaps once adorned with markings, now eroded by the weather, and scarred through the events of history.
