About
Written in 1991, this sonata is probably the most compact of all the composer’s works in the treatment of the material. It is based on a five note motif and the whole twenty-minute procedure involves manipulating and reworking that thematic ‘germ’. It is in three movements – a traditional fast-slow-fast scheme. Each movement starts with the same five-note motif, played like a turn in the first movement, as a scale over a held note in the second, and as a pianissimo flourish in the finale. Each movement also contains tiny musical fragments which are constantly developed and altered.
