About
During the 2020 Covid pandemic I dug out the score of my 1997 piano concerto (largely at the suggestion of the pianist, James Willshire, who had expressed an interest in the piece) to see if any of it was worth salvaging. As I suspected, most of it wasn’t, but the central (second) movement seemed to have some promising material which I expanded and developed to make a new one-movement work for piano and orchestra. The title suggests a sudden twist or turn (the original movement was subtitled Changes), and the extreme character changes in the music seem to mirror the intense polarity of moods which I, and many others experienced during the periods of lockdown which occupied so much of that pandemic year. The 5 main sections are marked Playful, Languid, Determined, Lost, and Positive.
