This collection of nine short pieces was written during a week in April 1985. The Latin word modulus means ‘a small measure’ and accounts for their brevity, some being only a few bars long. Brevity is also the hallmark of the thematic content, each one being based on a minute musical idea, namely an interval, chord, rhythmic figure or, in the case of the final piece, a single note.
