About
This piece must not, under any circumstances, be played without being followed by the Saint-Saëns.
It is dedicated to the memory of Martin Neary (1940-2025).
The composer thanks Martin Taylor.
Odile takes two musical ideas - the Swan by Saint-Saëns, which the choreographer Fokine made into a solo dance for Pavlova, and Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. In the ballet, the sorcerer von Rothbarts - who often appears as an owl - transforms his daughter Odile into a black swan. She is like a mirror image of the heroine Odette, like her reflection in the lake, and a lot of the musical ideas in Odile are reflections of the Saint Saens.
