Grind is a musical exploration of the act of two items coming into contact with one another repeatedly and aggressively. The act of a bow thrown against a string, or a hammer hitting a dampened coil of wire, has an obvious physical and sonic relationship with the word and its meaning, yet - despite this violence - we encounter it daily: grinding one's teeth, the daily grind, grinding gears, etc. Grind was composed as part of Psappha's Composing For scheme during the 2020-21 season and was premiered by the ensemble at Hallé St Peter's in Manchester in October 2021.
