The music responds to Sir Terry Frost’s painting Vertical Rhythms. Frost’s bold arcs, vibrant discs, displaced horizontals and rhythmicized verticals generate explosive spatial energy, as if the large outer curves compress and ignite the field of internal forms. The music attempts to respond in sound: harmonic sequences correspond to colours; gestures trace the interaction of circles, semicircles and stripes; and kinetic energy pulses through the texture, echoing Frost’s evocative orchestration of form and sensation. Vertical Rhythms is the sister piece to All Over Blue (after Frost’s Maritime Blues), and was premiered by Andrew Russo at The Exchange, Newlyn Art Gallery, Penzance, on July 19, 2008, following the premiere of All Over Blue in Dallas at the Van Cliburn Foundation’s ‘Modern at the Modern’ series (March 25, 2005).
