Trace le trois (trio for soprano saxophone, percussion and accordion) is a composition predominantly in three-note rhythm. The odd time signatures or metric units of 53/8, 43/8 and 31/8 are juxtaposed with even-numbered patterns of 52/8, 42/8 and 30/8, with minimal shifts in the pulse centre throughout. This supposedly complicated construction is broken up by predominantly simple rhythms in triple and quadruple time.
