You’re desperately trying to fall asleep when you hear a clock, or maybe even two clocks, ticking somewhere in the room. Who hasn’t had this experience? The constant ticking hammers its way into your consciousness until sleep is no longer an option. Time suddenly becomes tactile, and the clock begins to speak. And if clocks can talk, why not turn voices into clocks? These ideas form the basis of Marc L. Vogler’s composition “Clockwork”. Speaking in rhythms, the singers transform themselves into clocks that disturb the night’s sleep. They start chatting, get embroiled in polyphonic metrical conflicts and interlock with one another in various ways, just like the cogwheels of a clock. Rhythmically precise, the work develops a captivating groove. Sonic planes occasionally break through the ticking, making “Clockwork” a highly entertaining and expressive work. The composer Marc L. Vogler has already won numerous prizes for his work. “Clockwork” was awarded 3rd prize at the “Nocturne” competition run by the Voktett Hannover as part of the chor.com congress.
