Firefly was composed originally for solo flute in 1999. The version for clarinet was prepared especially for Alex South in 2018. It features agile, virtuosic flourishes. Permeating the piece is a darting, staccato motif which reflects the short, rhythmic flashes of light so characteristic of fireflies' mating ritual.
