This music was written for the virtuosity of four distinct musicians. I decided to explore some aspects of polyphonic relations within a musical flux based on the compression and expansion of four melodic phrases. In such a scenario, chamber music becomes a theatre of interchanging temporal relations connected with fugitive melodic and harmonic transformation: ever-changing transitions of elusive states of mind.

Transitions was commissioned by Margie Wu with funds provided by the Stiftung ?eppur si muove? in Zu?rich, Switzerland. The world premiere took place at the Konzerthaus, Berlin, on 24th September 2003 and was performed by the Modern Art Sextet.
