About
String Quartet No. 3 owes much to Keeley?s study of and absorption in the quartets of Joseph Haydn. The piece journeys from a perky and robust?Sonata Allegro,?through an?Andante?chorale,?an??Adagio,?a?Scherzo?and?Trio,?to a quasi-?Rondo Allegro?and?Coda, all within a single movement. Keeley?s playfulness towards his use of Classical formal structures can be enjoyed throughout ? the regular common time at the start being occasionally interrupted by a dance-like figure in 11/4 time, the chorale of the?Andante?being underlaid by pizzicato and buzzing repeated triplets, the role of silence in the?Adagio.
