This was written at a time when I was utterly absorbed in the connection between changeringing for bells and the 'permutation' of pitches in composition. So it?s built on a 6-note scale whose melodic patterns are derived from a ?modernised? version of a sequence for six bells called Tulip, to be rung out, traditionally, on the morning pf the first Sunday in spring. So the ?Dance? in the title is intended to indicate celebration, which simply means that the character of the music is to be dance-like, rather than an imitation of church-bells. The piece exists in a variety of scorings; one of them does involve bells! There?s an opening ?warm-up? with the 6-note scale ? first hesitant, then gradually changing gear? with each new pattern, leading to a happy conclusion at just before three minutes.
