So Long was composed in memory of my friend and colleague Professor David Sanjek during December 2011 and January 2012. David was always animated in his talking, he had a soft, busy voice.? He had an encyclopaedic knowledge and thirst for music.? Probably his favourite music was that of American Roots ? bluegrass, blues, country, gospel and so on.? I tried to capture the essence and character of his voice along with fragments of some of the musical gestures that were so dear to him.? Assisted by Markovian algorithms within the OpenMusic environment I was able to weave a web of gentle sonic dialogues. ?The Barbirolli Quarctet performed the work?s premiere in the Peel Hall, Salford 2012.
