About

I composed D?rive in 2015 for Re:Sono the piano duo featuring Nicholas Ashton and Lauryna Sableviciute and to mark the 90th birthday of Pierre Boulez ? my work?s gestures and textures pay homage to his piano writing.

The harmonic material of my work is ?derived? from Boulez? ?Sacher hexachord? that he first used in his piece Messagesquisse composed to celebrate the 70th birthday of Paul Sacher.

Boulez used this hexachord again on several occasions, perhaps most notably with his sublimely beautiful D?rive 2 which he composed in 1988 - for Elliott Carter?s 80th birthday.

D?rive for Boulez represented drift or deviation.? This is true also of my work which ?drifts? across different periods of time taking a variety of inspirations from Boulez? piano legacy.
