About

This short work for piano was commissioned by the pianist James Willshire and was written in the summer of 2001. The title is deliberately unspecific in that there are several definitions of the word 'Reeling', and four of these are portrayed in the music. Whilst the main thrust of the piece suggests a slightly distorted version of a Scottish Reel (which reappears periodically in fragmented guise), the rondo structure also contains passages which at times also allude to 'staggering uncertainly', 'a sustained noise', and 'feeling dizzy'. The music therefore has a distinctly schizophrenic nature, but the dance mood is generally maintained and the work ends with a section that combines all that has gone before.
