The ‘Links’ title of this concerto refers not only to the German word for ‘left’, but also to the use of brief quotes from 4 concerti commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein, whose sole purpose is to connect its four movements, and which therefore create brief historical reminders of the early 20th century flowering of works for the left hand only. The first of these links (the final four bars of the Ravel concerto, which happens to be one of my favourite endings in all music) starts the work, out of which the capriccio opening section emerges before the quote from the Hindemith concerto segues into the lively scherzando movement. A quote from the Prokofiev concerto acts as a link between this and the slow movement before a four-bar passage from Korngold’s concerto leads into the final lively closing section. The concerto is dedicated to Aaron Shorr whose unfortunate broken right arm (sustained falling off a ladder in his own home) triggered the challenge of writing something for his functioning left hand. Use of the sostenuto pedal is extensive throughout its 16-minute duration.
