Transience Patterns was commissioned in 2023 and composed for the Kreutzer Quartet and Roderick Chadwick as part of Jim Aitchison?s ?Hearing Shadows, Wordless Light? project, supported by Arts Council England, National Lottery Project Grants.

The music engages with installations by James Turrell at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in Cornwall, in particular, Aqua Oscura, a huge subterranean camera obscura. Part I. deals with the extraordinary physiological-psychologicalemotional experience of sight deprivation and pattern emergence. Part 2 responds to three of four seasonal engravings captured from the camera obscura. The music uses an enigma canon by Brahms as the basis for a large set of variations across the 3 movements of Part II.
