The four sections of this single-movement trio are shaped by the ancient notion of four elements - here in the order fire, water, earth and air. In the first section the clarinet leads the way from flickering to conflagration, and in the second the cello is in charge with a torrent of triplets. The instruments are more equally matched in the third where I imagine both the destructive forces and the fruitfulness of earth, and in the final part the rapid airy motion is lightly held together by a series of harmonies.
