About

SHADOWS was composed in 2011 as a commission for pianist Jeffrey Biegel and an international consortium of orchestras, anchored by the Louisiana Philharmonic. Zwilich wrote: "As people have migrated from their homelands to new lands for many centuries, taking with them 'shadows' of their homeland, this new composition will reflect the migration of the human spirit, in musical form, from continent to continent. Shadows of family life, religion, language, cultural roots bind us together as one world. Joining orchestras worldwide in musical diplomacy is the project mission, and the title of the work is one which we can all relate to in some way." During the quarantine of 2020, Zwilich created this new chamber version to facilitate performance with small chamber ensembles.
