Ellen Zwilich was already imagining music for contrabass and piano when bassist Michael Cameron serendipitously contacted her to commission such a work for premiere at the 2017 ISB convention. The result is Zwilich’s Excursion, a 6-minute work best described by its evocative title. Excursion teases with long sustained notes charged with expectations of being ready to take off in the fast lane at any moment, a promise which is realized with great exhilaration. Two piano parts are included with the publication to provide for solo tuning as well as concert pitch performance.
