The joker in the pack a for those wanting something more novel and challenging this year a is Richard Causton's The Flight . . . As the composer explains, the work 'intersperses a series of animated canons of increasing complexity with a gentle refrain of a different and profoundly calm, expressive colour . . . In addition to all this, Causton deploys the stringent effect of sliding cries in the top vocal line during the canons, emphasising the true drama of the act of fleeing, with an added high version of the cries indicated as being optional . . . I look forward to hearing the piece performed in both manners, but have little doubt that the obligatory cries alone would still produce a very dramatic and satisfactory result for those preferring not to include the sfff top Bs
