300 years ago, John Eccles only received second prize in a composition competition when the task in London was to write music for Congreve's masque "The Judgment of Paris". Eccles' introductory sonata, referred to in another source as the "Symphony for Mercury", quickly became popular at the time and is still regarded as one of the finest English trumpet works of the period.
