About

A fouth collection of Keith Jafrate's soulful and music and poetry in the grand lineage of spiritual jazz, performed once more by a team of top drawer northern UK players who can interpret this music with power and sensitivity. Keith writes: "with their fourth album on Discus, outside, uroboro continue to expand composition into improvisation, or perhaps set it free to become improvisation, or perhaps sabotage it with improvisation. by way of explanation, they offer an absorbing set of eight new pieces, four vocal and four instrumental. Keith Jafrate's lyrical poems are hauntingly sung by Faith Brackenbury, and the band have created a short jazz-rock gothic opera out of W. S. Graham's marvellous poem 'Imagine a Forest'. outside can mean outdoors, or outside society, or take the jazz meaning of outside the tradition: the album offers a variety of interpretations of these ideas, with strong basslines and dramatic arrangements dissolving into free playing that can be tender or fierce. this is focused music, whatever form it takes, and these superb musicians, as always, transform the composed elements into powerful live adventures that move through many territories."
