About
Truly entering the universe of Bill Evans doesn't just mean having great technique; it means, above all, possessing a unique sensitivity, capable of sustaining a harmonic language of rare emotional intensity with chords that don't simply sound good, with pauses that transform silence into a living part of the musical discourse, and melodic lines that seem to arise simultaneously from Chopin and Bebop. Few musicians manage to approach this world without being overwhelmed by it or, worse still, without retreating into sterile imitation.
Enrico Pieranunzi, on the other hand, has always had that inner disposition. His connection with Evans is neither episodic nor superficial: he dedicated a book to him, then a record with wind instruments, "Evans Remembered" in 2001, and above all a long process of silent absorption. With "Evanscape," recorded in Meudon in May 2025 and released by Bonsai Music on April 24, 2026, this relationship reaches a new stage of maturation, leading to a reduction of that language to its essence, rewriting it for new listening perspectives, and offering it perspectives beyond its own.
The choice to work as a duo with Bebo Ferra proves pivotal. Ferra, a Sardinian guitarist, is one of those musicians who can traverse different worlds without losing their own voice. His sound echoes Jim Hall and Bill Frisell, but his phrasing remains essential, introverted, and more oriented toward subtraction than accumulation.
