Los Angeles-based musician Sam Wilkes makes his debut for Psychic Hotline with 104.3, part of the label’s ongoing Singles Series. Known for his adventurous solo work and collaborations in the experimental and jazz worlds, Wilkes steps away from his usual bass to explore a borrowed Fender Stratocaster from longtime friend Brian Robert Jones (Paramore, Vampire Weekend).

On the night he first brought the guitar home, Wilkes captured a one-take, loop-based version of Tom Petty’s ‘Learning to Fly’, later adding bass and backing vocals. Weeks later, on his final evening with the Strat, he recorded the A-side—a fresh interpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘I Know I’m Not Wrong’. Both recordings are unplanned and instinctive, focusing on the joy of discovery rather than polished production.

The result is a pair of understated, warm performances that feel as unhurried as a summer drive. 104.3 joins previous Singles Series entries from artists including Kieran Hebden, Sam Gendel, Blake Mills, Flock of Dimes, Anjimile, and Bartees Strange, continuing the label’s tradition of spotlighting inventive, genre-spanning music.
