About

The music is composed by jazz vocalist, Miriam Kibakaya, and is inspired by the Nordic jazz sound. Vocals function as lead instrument together with saxophone and violin, and are accompanied by piano, double bass and drums. The heart of the music, composed by Miriam Kibakaya, is sly and braying, but perhaps most of all narrative.

Miriam Kibakaya is a vocalist from Trondheim with roots from Norway and Tanzania. With the debut album "Roots", we are invited into a reflection on where we come from, and get a glimpse of forgotten childhood dreams that may still haunt us where they drift restlessly and unfulfilled in our interior. The music is an observation of how we react when time begins to eat away at our memories and our loved ones. "Roots" is defined by longing, nostalgia and hope for our future selves. It is a testimony to how life can serve us adversity when we least expect it, but also how we ourselves also inflict adversity unintentionally on ourselves. Most of all, music tries to find a language where words no longer suffice, to describe our strongest and most complex feelings and to express our deepest desire to belong and to find a resting place for our hearts.

The album was recorded by Jo Ranheim in Øra Studio in 2022, mixed by Kyrre Laastad and mastered by Karl Klaseie.
