About

180g audiophile double vinyl reissue of this superb rare, deep and spiritual jazz opus album, recorded at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Los Angeles, in 1979. Re-mastering by Cicely Baston at Alchemy/Air Mastering.

The music of Horace Tapscott and The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra is part Sun Ra Arkestra, part John Coltrane, part Art Ensemble of Chicago. This ground-breaking and monumental album explores the multi-faceted deep and spiritual jazz of Tapscott - Afro-centric rhythms, hypnotic bass lines, Tapscott's stabbing modal piano playing and stunning flute and horn arrangements. "The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - Live at I.U.C.C." is a true high point in the cannon of great independent underground jazz music recorded during this era.

While rooted in Coltrane-Tyner modalism and Monkish melodic whimsy, Tapscott found a way of boldly personalising his ensemble sound whether he was writing and arranging for a nine or sixteenpiece band. His orchestrations pull off the none-too-easy trick of moving from levity to density without any abrupt shifts, flowing on an often danceable pulse.
