The self-titled debut by the all-female New York collective Artemis delivered contemporary mainstream jazz with cool lyricism and a tailored edge. Three years on, their confident Blue Note follow-up, In Real Time, adds flamboyant brass and ups rhythmic bite.

The Blue Note label is stylistically eclectic these days but here’s one contemporary signing that could slot into its mid-Sixties heyday when postbop ruled. Robust voicings, free-jazz diversions and searching modal patterns all feature in the intricate style of Artemis, and they cover Wayne Shorter to boot. Yet In Real Time could only be the work of this all-female band, so distinctive is each voice and so striking their sense of unity.

Multi-cultural as well as multi-generational, Artemis continue blending the best of us into a froth which never goes flat.
