Guitarist Lionel Loueke's debut recording, now released in the UK for the first time, demonstrates in no uncertain terms why artists of Herbie Hancock's stature are clamouring to work with him Released in 2005, Loueke's solo debut is a live recording without overdubs. However, his seamless use of looping technology transforms his nylon stringed acoustic guitar and vocals into something larger than one instrument and one voice. Loueke also creates drum patterns by slapping the guitar and tapping his fingers on its body. Ranging from the darkly lyrical to the intensely rhythmic, 'In a Trance' is a remarkable first outing Loueke has a singular approach to his instrument, mixing a traditional African approach with modern jazz harmonies. His unique sound has led to appearances on two of Herbie Hancock's recent albums, 'Possibilities' and 'River: The Joni Letters' and he made his major label debut in 2008 when Blue Note released 'Karibu'.
