About
This project from two of the UK's most talented musicians, saxophonist Ed Jones and trumpeter Damon Brown, features the rhythm section of Ben Hazleton and Troy Miller. 'Sincerely Whatever' is a technically brilliant, hard-hitting exploration of funk, Latin, bop and even drum & bass, with furious interplay within a spacious environment.
Ed Jones has been leading his own groups since the 1980s. Recently his playing has been attracting much attention with hip-hop/nujazz audiences as frontline saxophonist with Us3's touring band, whilst he is also well known for his work with the group Incognito. Damon Brown is one of the UK's leading Jazz musicians. He performs and tours internationally with his band and has also played with many great Jazz musicians including Steve Grossman, Benny Golson, Dave Liebman, and many others. Damon has also worked in the rock/pop/dance field with bands such as The Specials.
Damon Brown on Killer Shrimp: "The project is very much a culmination of many years spent touring with each other's bands and our friendship on and off stage. It's a vehicle for both our writing and playing and an attempt to expand into, for us, some new areas. Although rooted in straight-ahead jazz, the music is quite eclectic and touches at times on drum and bass, Latin and funk. Both Ed and I have worked a lot in groove-related projects over the years and wanted to do something that stayed close to the spirit of jazz and improvisation but that also incorporated some different rhythms and more open textures than we usually incorporate in our quintets. To this end we chose Troy Miller and Ben Hazelton, on drums and double bass respectively, as they are very experienced at playing jazz from these angles and are very familiar with both our playing and writing styles."
Damon Brown: trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals
Ed Jones: soprano, tenor saxophones, bass clarinet
