About
A double CD for the price of one. The latest of the 'year' CDs by Chris Barber's Jazz Band. This completes the recordings Chris Barber made for the legendary record producer Denis Preston's Record Supervision company and released on EMI's Lansdowne Jazz Series. Disc 1 is based around the last LP made under the deal with EMI. The rest of the collection is made up of EPs, singles and an LP recorded in Hungary. 1961 was a significant year for Chris Barber: the front line of the band had remained intact since the band's inception in 1954, but at the end of 1960 clarinettist Monty Sunshine left. Sunshine was one of the stars of the band with Barber's only hit record, Petite Fleur, being a Sunshine solo feature. The music press made much of the split. 1961 saw the arrival of Ian Wheeler who brought not only clarinet, but alto and soprano saxophones and harmonica thus the band 'sound' subtly changed. An EP featuring Wheeler was quickly released and is in this collection. All the other 'suspects' are there including vocalist, Ottile Patterson who is still extremely popular and the CDs under her name have given LAKE Records two of its biggest selling CDs. The collection also includes the single' Revival' which achieved some chart success as well as 'Trad Tavern' which was the theme tune to Barber's weekly radio programme. Also included are the two tracks from the film It's Trad Dad.
