Homestretch by pianist and composer Pontus Lundberg is a new Swedish jazz record with music that has its foundation in the 1960s Blue Note sound, but where there also is room for both modern harmonies with elements from pop and fusion. The music is honest, Lundberg's melodies and harmonies are composed from the heart and may take the path they need without regard to modern ideals. Yet the music feels innovative and fresh. The sextet format with two saxophones, trombone and rhythm section gives a warm, rich sound and the many soloists will come into its own and showcase their various personal voices.
