About

This studio recording from James "Blood" Ulmer combines his two great influences, jazz and blues, with a distinctive guitar sound that has been described as "jagged" and "stinging." In June 2009 Ulmer and the trio were invited by Ornette Coleman to perform as part of the Meltdown Festival at the South Bank Centre in London.

Ulmer first performed with Ornette Coleman's innovative lineup in the early 1970s when he was the first electric guitarist to record and tour extensively with Coleman. He has credited Coleman as a major influence, and Coleman's strong reliance on electric guitar in his fusion-oriented recordings owes a distinct debt to Ulmer.

In the 1980s and 1990s Ulmer worked and recorded with the likes David Murray, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Arthur Blythe, Sam Rivers, Hamiet Bluiett and George Adams. He has also recorded many albums as a leader, including three recent acclaimed blues-oriented records produced by Vernon Reid.

Personnel: James "Blood" Ulmer (guitar, vocals, flute), Mark Peterson (electric & acoustic bass), Aubrey Dayle (drums)
