About

Born in Chicago, Sachal Vasandani grew up in a household listening to all types of jazz from Ellington to Keith Jarrett. While studying economics at the University of Michigan, Sachal also earned degrees in Jazz and C lassical music. He went on to work as an investment banker on Wall Street to subsidize his passion but later quit to devote himself to music. Now based in New York, Sachal says it’s the perfect place for him to be: “I'm connected to a bit of the jazz scene, but there's also such a cross-pollination of different kinds of music here. I'm looking forward to expanding my reach, to establish myself and my voice as well as explore all the different scenes here. There are so many fantastic elements of New York that I want to put through my own filter.”

Sachal was chosen as the Rising Star Male Vocalist of the Year by Down-Beat Magazine Critics Poll in 2010. While considered one of the most exciting new voices in jazz, his original compositions include elements of pop, hip-hop, electronic, Brazilian rhythms and Afro-beat. His catchy melodies and rare depth of emotion in the lyrics appeal to a wider audience. The album includes a soulful rendition of ‘Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)’, a hit made famous by Gladys Knight with the Pipes in 1973.
