A native of Hampton, Virginia, but a resident of New York City since 1987, alto and soprano saxman Steve Wilson played in various R&B and funk bands through his teens while studying music at university in Richmond, VA. After his move to NYC he quickly became one of the most in-demand jazz sidemen, both in the studio and on the bandstand. He has recorded and/or toured with such diverse artists as Lionel Hampton, Chick Corea, Charlie Byrd, Dianne Reeves, Louie Bellson and many more. On this album, his sixth but his debut with MaxJazz, he is influenced by the close bond he felt with black radio during the 1970s. Here are his readings of songs associated with Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, The Staple Singers, Gil Scott Heron, Patrice Rushen and Chic Corea along with several original compositions celebrating the sense of community he felt at that time.
