LOVE FUGUE is a fanciful and somewhat off-the-wall construction by jazz pianist Uri Caine which uses the music of Robert Schumann as basic source material. Caine has freely adapted Schumann's 'Dichterliebe' songs into jazz style arrangements, some uproariously zany, spit out and growled by vocalist David Moss, others sweetly crooned by Mark Ledford, all with lyrics sung in English and in several cases combined with new spoken word texts by various poets. The whole cycle is then interleaved with the four movements of the Op. 47 Piano Quartet, here given a lively performance on period instruments by the Italian ensemble La Gaia Scienza.
